The Sonata in A major for Violin and Piano by César Franck is one of his best-known compositions, and is considered one of the finest sonatas for violin and piano ever written. The Violin Sonata in A was written in 1886, when César Franck was 63, as a wedding present for the 31-year-old violinist Eugène Ysaÿe

The String Quartet in D major is the only string quartet composed by César Franck. The work was written from 1889 to 1890. The creative life of Franck is broadly divided into three periods.

Céllaume-Hubert Franck (10 December 1822 – 8 November 1890) was a composer, pianist, organist, and music teacher who worked in Paris during his adult life. He was born at Liège, in what is now Belgium (though at the time of his birth it was part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands). He gave his first concerts there in 1834 and studied privately in Paris from 1835, where his teachers included Anton Reicha.

Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5. 4.

Céllaume-Hubert Franck (December 10, 1822 – November 8, 1890), a composer, organist and music teacher of Belgian origin, was one of the great figures in classical music in France (and the world) in the second half of the 19th century. César Franck was born in Liège, Belgium. His father had ambitions for him to become a concert pianist, and he studied at the conservatoire in Liège before going to the Paris Conservatoire in 1837. Upon leaving in 1842 he briefly returned to Belgium, but went back to Paris in 1844 and remained there for the rest of his life.

Opus/Catalogue NumberOp. As d'Indy points out in his Franck biography, O. 2 was earlier assigned, (in 1844), to Franck's 2nd fantasia (on Gulistan). The title Messe solennelle belongs to Mass, FWV 59, though it is mistakenly used with this one. The original version was with orchestral accompaniment, the published version (1872) is an arrangement, though since he never published the original, one might consider it a revision.

Unity. Part 1 introduces the issues mentioned above, before establishing the three pieces that are being investigated, and why this particular repertoire was chosen. Here it is important to note the implications of this relatively small-scale study – the resultant focus on just three works becomes something of a positive attribute rather than a limitation. It is certainly a great disservice to César Franck that literature addressing his music in any great detail is somewhat scarce. As a result, his position as a great revolutionary of French music has too often been dismissed, and he seems to have become something of an anomaly of the late Romantic period.
