For City of Refuge, Castanets' Raymond Raposa decamped, alone, to a tiny desert outpost in Nevada, away from Brooklyn, away from social interaction. The resulting album is appropriately barren and full of spirits. Sufjan Stevens and Jana Hunter guest. For City of Refuge, Castanets' Raymond Raposa decamped, alone, to a tiny desert outpost in Nevada, away from Brooklyn, away from social interaction. Castanets' Raymond Raposa has never shied from mortality. His folk-electronic hybrids have often romanticized death, which isn't the same thing as honoring it. But for City of Refuge - which is really no city at all- Raposa decamped, alone, to a tiny desert outpost in Nevada, away from Brooklyn, away from social interaction.

Desolation is the canvas on which Castanets mastermind Ray Raposa chooses to present his unique brand of "experimental Americana," and City of Refuge does little to refute that notion. Recorded alone over three weeks in a desolate motel room in Overton, NV, Raposa (no stranger to depression, melancholy, and futility) populates his small corner of the country with a single electric guitar that conjures up images of a spaghetti Western gone all wrong

The album City of Refuge was recorded in the Nevada desert town of Overton and released in 2007. Raposa had planned to record the whole record in Overton, but failing equipment forced him to make a temporary return to San Diego, where he and Rafter completed the album with contributions by Jason Crane, Pall Jenkins, Andy Robillard and DM. Stith. Before beginning the recording of a fifth album, Texas Rose, the Thaw, and the Beasts, Raposa left New York and moved to Portland. He toured Europe in support of those releases. He estimated in 2008 that Castanets was about to kick off.

City of Refuge, the fourth full-length from Ray Raposa’s avant folk project Castanets, comes armed with a mighty compelling back story: Waking to a desolate gas station in Overton, Nevada while driving through on tour, Raposa was struck with inspiration and decided to record the next Castanets album there. Holed up in a tiny motel room with co-producer Ero Gray, the pair emerged with three week's worth of raw field recordings. Delicate overdubs were added later by some of Raposa’s esteemed collaborators, including Sufjan Stevens, Jana Hunter, Scott Tuma, and Dawn Smithson (Sunn O))))

If Nina Nastasia and Jim White made an album that acted as an intimate conversation between their audience and themselves, then Ray Raposa’s Castanets project cuts out the listener entirely. Across five LPs, Raposa’s moved from gothic, swampy folk to lofty sweetness to desolate, heat-soaked desert music. It’s all good in its own way, and each album is united by the fact that the actual songs - and by songs I mean coherent pieces with basic structure and lyrics - are spread out across drifts of noise and ambience.
