What Passes For Survival sounds even less traditional death metal than Mother of Virtues, sounding a lot more like the band listened to a LOT of crust punk and grindcore. There are a few inklings of almost Morbid Angel riffage throughout the album such as The Unraveling, and the latter parts of Tennessee. What Passes For Survival is one of the few albums I have been able to say sounds like the purest example of musical evil.
Be warned, What Passes For Survival is not for those of you with a faint heart, closed minds or a non-confrontational disposition. The hybrid of influences or lack thereof is clearly evident on this, PYRRHON’s fifth official release. I came across this album sheerly by fluke, and I am so grateful for the privilege. Having long been a fan of music that is art as much as it is music – I mean the whole package: cover, lyrics, musicianship – art at its very core is both created to inspire just as it meant to test us or meant to pose questions.

Album · 2017 · 9 Songs. What Passes For Survival is technical death metal seemingly created by Dadaists. Most of its songs are nonlinear splatters of amorphous riffs and centrifugal rhythms: The Invisible Hand Holds a Whip drops gooey layers of screams and grunts into the already disorienting mix, while the grindcore-flavored Trash Talk Landfill turns all of it cold and atonal. But Pyrrhon can also drop down a couple of gears, as on Empty Tenement Spirit, which is a bottomless pit of blackened clangs and plodding drums. What Passes For Survival Pyrrhon.
