LW3's dad was Loudon Wainwright Jr, a senior journalist at Life magazine. And we all know there comes a time in every chap's life when he has to face up to the reality of his old man, whether we like it (or him) or not. Just ask Rufus Wainwright. As are most of the people who've ever meant much to LW3, including daughters, ex-wives, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Chris Smither and Dame Edna Everage. Yes, that one. They duet on "I Remember Sex". And if you're thinking, "Well, that's going to be a barrell of laughs", then you'd be on the money. But it is also touching, wise and not half as self-exculpatory as such exercises often are. It is, as you might expect, an album of Americana for grown-ups.
I Remember Sex" with comedian Barry Humphries (better known as Dame Edna Everage) is a worthy laugh, but the real joy here is in the somber reflections of "In C," the title track (which begins with Loudon reading the his father's words and his son, Rufus, adding vocals), and "The Days That We Die," which also starts with his. father's eloquent words. Loudon comes from literary stock, and it's always shown in his work, which has become even more affecting as the years pass. Older Than My Old Man Now Loudon Wainwright III. Singer/Songwriter.
From Woody Guthrie-style blues to a duet about sex with Dame Edna Everage – it can only be a new Loudon Wainwright III album, writes Robin Denselow. There are 14 new songs here, along with an exquisite ballad he wrote with Kate McGarrigle back in the 70s, all dealing with "death'n'decay". And it works, thanks to his bleak wit, his ability to match thoughtful lyrics against varied, mostly blues-based settings, and help from special guests. Best of all, there's an improbable duet with Dame Edna Everage (Barry Humphries) on the bittersweet I Remember Sex. I can't imagine anyone else even attempting a song like that. No less than 5 generations of Wainwrights make contributions to this new album with duets with Rufus, Martha, Lucy Wainwright Roche, Lexie Kelly Wainwright, Suzzy Roche, along with other esteemed guests John Scofield, Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Dame Edna Everage. Double Lifetime, I Remember Sex, My Meds are my favourites, but the whole album is enjoyable. A very different sound compared to the rest of my collection, but it's a welcome change to the polished performances. I have been a fan of Loudon Wainwright for many years now but this album slightly disappointed.
The North Carolina-born songsmith and actor Loudon Wainwright III has grown used to his kids Rufus and Martha stealing the limelight. The Wainwright dynasty is nothing if not competitive, though, and dad – now 65 and still in fine voice – makes a splendid return here.
by Loudon Wainwright III. Record Label: 2nd Story Sound. Release Date: Apr 17, 2012. After he goes down on his knees and prays, as he promises he will, this album will be Exhibit A on his application. With the exceptions of 'Date Line' and 'I Remember Sex', one of Loudon's best records ever, IMO. The other 13 tunes rate a '1.Expand.
