Formed in 1980, they released their debut album Beach Party in 1981. Snapped up by indie Cherry Red, their follow up and last album was Lazy Ways released in 1983. It was produced by Stuart Moxham from Young Marble Giants and showcased a little more polished, mature sound. Few people know that before Everything But the Girl, Tracey Thorn played acoustic lo-fi pop along with Gina Hartman and sisters Alice Fox and Jane Fox in Marine Girls. Formed in 1980, they released their debut.

on Lazy Ways/Beach Party. Marine Girls - Lazy Ways. Marine Girls - Lazy Ways (Peel Session). Marine Girls - A Place in the Sun (Official Video 1983). THE MARINE GIRLS Lazy Ways (Live). Marine Girls "Leave Me With The Boy". Marine Girls - In Love/Honey. Marine Girls Time We Used To Spend.

The Marine Girls' second and final album - the group had already split by the time of its release, with Tracey Thorn pursuing a solo career before forming Everything But the Girl and the Fox sisters forming the even more minimalist Grab Grab the Haddock - is far more polished than their 1981 debut, at times almost approaching professionalism. The clangorous clatter of the debut is largely absent here. Her guitar playing and Jane Fox' bass work are also considerably more refined. Purists might miss the noisiness of Beach Party, but Lazy Ways is in every way a far better record, and one of the best . indie albums of 1983.

If there is a definition of innocent music, Marine Girls are quite an experience - modest, nice, soothing, emotionally honest and at times sad - despite the melancholically introverted optimism they share throughout this, double set (two albums collected on one CD). Music as simple as it is occasionally sliding in and out of pre-shoegaze with reggae leanings... Sadly masterpieces like this are rarely witnessed nowadays. Although Tracey Thorn's remarkable vocals are already reminiscent of the later-on Everything But the Girl trademarks, Marine Girls show mutual respect in sharing their creative control. Hugely enjoyable listening experience. Highly recommended.
