Marian Cantatas & Arias is a recoring under the direction of Reinhard Goebel who leads the Musica Antiqua Koln on this Deutsche Grammophon GmbH and was recorded 1994. Anne Sofie Von Otter is outstanding and I love listening to such a refined voice. Reinhard Goebel has written the liner-notes (translated to English by Mary Whittall). The orchestra underlines her emotion and helps making the message in Händel's music solid. The whole performance is magnificent! Also, this music is an undiscovered pearl, showing the great senserity of Händel as a young composer. The music is far less sweeter than his later works, his operas et. .The lyrics are strong, portraying Mary as a fullblooded human being, revealing emotions much more direct than most sacred music of today.
Works: Marian Cantatas; Arias. Performer: Anne Sofie von Otter (soprano)Musica Antiqua Köln/Reinhard Goebel. A second drawback is that Musica Antiqua Köln sounds rather lacklustre throughout this disc. Their playing lacks buoyancy and sharpness, and their pacing often seems leaden-footed. At least Anne Sofie von Otter is in magnificent voice. Her singing, firm and assured, brilliantly conveys the music’s dramas and subtleties. But, overall, this is a disappointing release.
Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel have been Archiv Produktion exclusive artists since 1978. Their innovative role in the discovery and realization of unusual early music repertoire has been acknowledged internationally, as is apparent from the group's numerous awards: for example their recording of chamber concertos by Telemann (Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1981), the collections German Chamber Music before Bach (Deutscher Schallplattenpreis 1982) and The Bach Family before Johann Sebastian (Grand Prix International du Disque 1987.
