Crimson is the fifth full-length studio album by Swedish death metal band Edge of Sanity, which is their first concept album and was released in 1996 by Black Mark Production. It features a single 40-minute track, telling a story in the distant future, when human civilization is about to end. The album, which features Opeth frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt, received substantial critical acclaim, and is considered by most fans to be Edge of Sanity's finest achievement

I shall break this down into two sections, one that addresses the sound and the songwriting, and then, of course one that addresses this song as one flowing composition. Crimson II upholds the legacy of the original; in some places better, in some worse. The sound has declined - while the original Crimson could have been a classic melodeath album even if it had not been a singular song, the followup is fairly unmemorable when split into parts. As one long song, the second Crimson is better, though the improvements are basic and marginal.

Crimson II is definitely one of my top three albums of all time because of all the musical variety within it; it has brutality, melody, and just it is just plain epic. What makes this more spectacular is that after Edge of Sanity broke up after recording Cryptic without Swano, he reformed the band by himself to record this album. Every solo, riff, synth, bass line, and drum section was written by this man. That in itself was unbelievable, but to follow it up with producing one of the best albums ever truly shows Dan Swano’s talents.
