The Choir of Westminster Abbey, James O’Donnell. An admirably varied programme, with excellent Hyperion recording. This new recording from Westminster Abbey presents Matins, Eucharist and Evensong as they might be heard on the Feast of St Edward (13 October). The Saint, whose death in 1066 sparked the Norman Conquest, remains buried in the Abbey to this day and his shrine is a point of global pilgrimage.

The Feast of St. Edward, King and Confessor at Westminster Abbey. The King and the Robin, for choir & organ. Choir of Westminster Abbey, James O'Donnell.

Eloquence is one of the most critically-claimed classical reissue series in the world. Westminster Abbey is a royal church, founded in 1065 by King Edward the Confessor, who was buried in the original Norman building only a few days after its consecration. Almost exactly two centuries later, in 1269, his body was ‘translated’ or removed to its present resting-place in the shrine east of the High Altar. It is this ceremony which is commemorated every year on the anniversary, 13 October. The Translation of St. Edward is, in fact, one of the high festivals in the Abbey’s domestic calendar

Edward the Confessor was King from 1042 to 1066. He founded a monastery to St Peter, known as Westminster Abbey. His body still lies in his Shrine. He was buried on 6th, the Feast of the Epiphany before the High Altar. According to Prior Osbert of Clare's life of Edward William the Conqueror had a reliquary of gold and silver made for Edward's remains. In 1102 Osbert describes the opening of the tomb (for what reason is not known).

Evening Prayer is a liturgy in use in the Anglican tradition celebrated in the late afternoon or evening. It is also commonly known as Evensong, especially when the office is rendered chorally, that is, when most of the service is sung. It is roughly the equivalent of Vespers in the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran churches, although it was originally formed by combining the monastic offices of Vespers and Compline.

The Evensong anthem is the first recording of The King and the Robin, composed for the millennial celebrations of St Edward's birth in 1005 with music by Philip Moore and words by the Poet Laureate, Andrew Motion. The Eucharist setting is Jonathan Harvey's adventurous Missa brevis, composed for the Abbey in 1995 and here receiving its first recording. Recorded by The Choir of Westminster Abbey. Organ by Robert Quinney. The Service of Matins is centred on the Morning Canticles from Stanford's epic Service in C, Op 115, while Evensong takes its cue from Purcell's masterful Evening Service in G minor, Z231.
