The first authorized reissue of Mort Garson's legendary 1976 album, 'Mother Earth's Plantasia. Subtitled warm earth music for plant. nd the people that love them, it was full of bucolic, charming, stoner-friendly, decidedly unscientific tunes enacted on the new-fangled device called the Moog. If you purchased a snake plant, asparagus fern, peace lily, or what have you from Mother Earth on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles (or bought a Simmons mattress from Sears), you also took home Plantasia, an album recorded especially for plants.

The story behind Mother Earth’s Plantasia, subtitled Warm Earth Music for Plant. nd the People Who Love Them, is just as fascinating as the music. Garson conceived the album with Lynn and Joel Rapp, who ran Mother Earth Plant Boutique on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles.

Garson composed Plantasia using the recently released Moog synthesiser for the Los Angeles plant shop Mother Earth and the album was sold specifically for the plants brought home by Mother Earth’s customers. To celebrate the re-release, Sacred Bones and Atlas Obscura will be co-presenting a Plantasia listening experience and workshop at Brooklyn Botanic Garden on June 18. Mother Earth’s Plantasia is out now, with a physical release set for June 21. Check out the adorable cover art and tracklist below. Mother Earth's Plantasia is a music studio album recording by MORT GARSON (Progressive ve Rock) released in 1976 on cd, lp, vinyl and/or cassette.

Mort Garson was a composer, occultist, and early electronic music pioneer. Although he maintained a relatively low profile during his lifetime, much of Garson’s music found its way into the heart of popular culture. In 1976, Garson took Tompkins and Bird’s advice literally, recording an album of plant music as a promotional item for Mother Earth Plant Boutique. He called it Mother Earth’s Plantasia. Subtitled warm earth music for plants and the people who love them, in the 43 years since it was released, Plantasia has become an open secret among plant lovers, obscure record collectors, and. Sacred Bones Records release Mother Earth’s Plantasia on vinyl alongside Plantasia merchandise on June 21.

Mother Earth's Plantasia.

Mother Earth's Plantasia is probably one of the most widely known private-press records-now, after years of bootlegs, the record is finally getting its first official vinyl reissue, a double LP from the Brooklyn label Sacred Bones. Garson was part of the canon of commercial composers who, through experimental passion projects, became unsung heroes of early ambient music. He followed a similar path as artists like Raymond Scott, Wendy Carlos and Dick Hyman, whose conceptual electronic projects brought a revolutionary edge to easy listening.

There are used copies of this record all over Los Angeles right now. If you are willing to pay for it...Permanent has two copies on their wall.
Recently listened to it for the first time, and I love it. It's good enough to make Wendy Carlos and Dick Hymen head for the hills.
Glad to hear that this is finally being reissued. It was about time
Rough Trade, Bleep, and eventually VinylMePlease will have exclusives of this.Discogs has a cassette version for this too https://exclusives.discogs.com/product/mort-garson-cassette/
Sacred Bones are taking preorders for an official reissue of Plantasia in both black and green vinyl. Out this June! :-)
I wish I could get the excited about anything reissue but I can't. I prefer to have the original. Such a gamble getting new pressings
Looks like an official reissue is coming out on Sacred Bones Records on LP and cassette in June.
From a 2016 interview with Mort's daughter:- "But she says her father never stopped writing until his death in 2008. “He still kept his studio, he wrote every day,” she says. “He never stopped. We have boxes and boxes and boxes of my father’s music. Because I don’t understand music, I don’t read music. I have tons of music that could be really important, but I don’t know what to do with it.” -http://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2016/09/mort-garson-featureI hope there's an archivist out there who can help collate Garson's unreleased material. His legacy deserves some careful attention. May be the only route to an official reissue of Plantasia too. I believe Homewood Records was his own label. So his daughter most likely has the original recordings / copyright now.
My favourite Moog-ambient album and my favourite release from Mort Garson. Bless this masterpiece
Absolutely incredible! One of the best Moog-ambient albums ever created! 10/5!
Perhaps i'm missing something and my ears have packed in due to old age, but personally this repress on The Great Thunder sounds perfectly fine to me - wonderfully warm and lovely synths, seems to have been done really well. No inserts or fancy stuff, not even an address for The Great Thunder on there but considering how much OG copies go for, i'm more than happy with this. A welcome addition to the collection after all these years.
OH WOW. I'd not *properly* listened to the two of them but YES, THERE IS AN ENTIRE CHANNEL MISSING still. It's essentially a low walking bass synth line, very obvious on track 1, i'm still going through the release but i'd wager it continues throughout. I'm a pretty positive thinking kinda guy so i'll say this - as a re-press of the original Plantasia it's REALLY NOT VERY GOOD. However, as a £20 slab of twinkly/pretty/weird 70s synthy sounds it's fairly good. I just wish someone like Trunk Records would do a proper, authentic job, complete with booklet. Fingers crossed. *Edit* - I'm going to try to record the repress on YouTube in a few days time for anyone interested.
Other reviews indicate that, like the 5th Dimension release, an entire channel is missing on the latest Great Thunder release. I interpret that to mean there are some sounds that are missing or maybe it is not properly recorded in stereo (with separate sounds coming out of right and left speakers). The YouTube video above seems to be the full album from the original release, with noticeably different/separate stereo channels. Perhaps you could comment for sake of comparison?
This is getting a vinyl re-release on The Great Thunder label, due to be available on 24th April 2017. Very little info at present - they don't seem to have a website or any online presence but i'm hoping they'll do it justice.
I'm fairly sure that The Great Thunder is another alias for whoever is behind Fifth Dimension, if you look at their forthcoming release 2 out of the 3 are represses of previous Fifth Dimension reissues. Bootlegging controversy aside, I own the Fifth Dimension pressing of this and I am happy with it, it seems to be a very high quality vinyl rip - almost certainly more enjoyable to listen to than an original in the condition you're likely to encounter it in.
Me and my plants where glad to hear about this re-release; still available for preorder at redeyerecords.co.uk. Especially since I've heard bad things about the quality of existing bootlegs (Fifth Dimension label). Would be cool if it includes a booklet like the original pressing!
I think there's a lot more of these around than Discogs would have you believe. I remember my parents buying a new mattress at Sleepers in the late 1970s and they got this album and a plant for free. I'm sure they weren't the only ones, so there's untold copies out there in old hippies' basements waiting to be rediscovered..

Yes not worth the 200+ price tag here , go to eBay still grab em for under 100
Guess we'll never know how many copies there were. This was the sole release on this label and so I wonder if Mort Garson financed and put out this release himself. That said I've heard stories of people picking this up at thrift stores for a dollar, though not since the 90s
Brilliant release of Moog music. Nicely composed with choice use of sounds and stereo placement. Theres no cheese-ball pop covers and all the tracks are listener friendly esp. for Moog aficionados!Glad this unknown gem was finally available on cd!
This really is a beautiful simple album. The music is very relaxing. I can hear some Nintendo Gameboy in there too. Love it.
No such Gameboy was discovered till 1990s ... Amazing music mastery
