The miracle Herbert von Karajan: this box of 117 CDs provides a comprehensive documentation of his artistic achievement beginning with the spectacular arrival in Berlin of the young conductor from the provinces in 1938, through the difficult period of wartime and its aftermath up until recordings produced in 1960 that made him undoubtedly the No. 1 among conductors in Europe and worldwide. Where recordings of classical music are concerned Herbert von Karajan was always, and still is, the hallmark of excellence. Philharmonia Orchestra. Among the conductors who worked with the orchestra in its early years were Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler and Arturo Toscanini; of the Philharmonia's younger conductors, the most important to its development was Herbert von Karajan, who though never formally chief conductor was closely associated with the orchestra in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
