Ultimately, the plan didn't pan out, but for a brief while, the quartet - who adopted the name Mad Season - did have their moment of clarity, captured on the 1995 album Above. There was a single issued to modern rock radio - "River of Deceit" - but this record downplayed easy hooks and melody in favor of churning introspection and slow vamps that occasionally flirt with blues (the never-ending 12-bar "Artificial Red," balanced by the distorto riffs of "I Don't Everything"), but usually conjure nothing more than the. dank sludge of Seattle.

Mad Season was an American rock supergroup formed in Seattle, Washington in 1994 by members of three popular Seattle-based bands: Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees. Mad Season released only one album, Above, and is best known for the single "River of Deceit". The band went on a semi-permanent hiatus in 1996 due to the band members' conflicting schedules and vocalist Layne Staley's problems with substance abuse. To honor our departed brothers, Mike and I oversaw a Mad Season box set, which comes out March 12th, 2013. It contains the re-mastered Above album, the Moore concert on DVD with surround sound, and a bunch of live recordings that we never released. The most exciting stuff: three songs that Mark Lanegan wrote lyrics and sang on, songs that we started to record for the second album but never finished because of Baker’s and Layne’s deaths.

Mad Season features the legendary Layne Staley of Alice in Chains on vocals, Mike McCready of Pearl Jam on lead guitar, Screaming Trees drummer Barrett Martin and bassist John Baker Saunders of the Lamont Cranston Band. The band recorded and released one album, Above, in 1995 which was certified Gold and became an essential touchstone in the history of Seattle rock. Above is the only complete album of Layne Staley's introspective and mystical lyrics, which were highlighted by additional vocals from Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan.

35 short stories in the book, "The Way Of The Zen Cowboy," and 20 new compositions from the album, "Songs Of The Firebird. I guess you could say that the stories in the book take you on a journey, and the album provides the soundtrack for those stories

The only album to be completed by the Seattle-based supergroup Mad Season, Above has achieved mythic status among hard rock aficionados. Previously unreleased bonus tracks ("Locomotive", "Black Book Of Fear", "Slip Away") and a remix of "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier".

One of my favorite albums of all time...all star cast of the grunge era.

Could be perhaps that this pressing is kinda crappy. This is what I heard, and I used to have it in my collection, and I remember that it didn't sound nice at all, but I thought I had a defective copy. A bit noisy and not a loud enough master. It was probably pressed on cheap vinyl also, and mastered from the CD files. I'm not 100% sure it has all of these problems, but certainly it has a few.Much better off with the MOV repress which sounds absolutely fantastic.

Why have you only given your favourite album of all time just three stars?
