Channeling this fiery legacy, Seun Kuti’s Black Times, the fourth album he’s recorded in cahoots with his father’s Egypt 80 ensemble, forcefully drives home the infectious protest power of Afrobeat. Last Revolutionary sparks the eight-track set into life. Powered by Shinan Abiodun’s furious snares, Oladimeji Akinyele’s trumpet blasts lead the charge as Kuti anoints himself the walking, talking struggle of my people. This belief in the power of change pulses through the rest of the album. Growing up to the world as Fela Kuti’s son will naturally always cast something of a shadow over Seun Kuti’s music, but Black Times comes across as both a respectful reminder of his legacy and a demonstration of Kuti’s own fresh talent. Humble enough to acknowledge his place in a grander lineage, Last Revolutionary features Kuti embarking on a metaphysical roll call.
Seun Kuti & Egypt 80 return with a huge new single, ‘Black Times’, featuring the unmistakeable guitar work of special guest Carlos Santana. Based around an infectious mid-tempo Afrobeat groove, the track sees Seun calling for reflection and a collective focus on black history to energise and organise for the future: We must pass the black knowledge to the future black God and Goddess. Black Times’ is the title track from his new album, which will be released on 2nd March 2018 on Strut. released December 8, 2017.
Seun Kuti's fourth album fronting Egypt 80, the all-conquering Afrobeat band he inherited from his father, Fela Kuti, marks the end of an era-and also supports the maxim that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Black Times is the first album released by Egypt 80 not to feature saxophonist and keyboard player Lekan Animashaun, who was the ensemble's bandleader since its formation in 1979 until last year. Animashaun joined Fela's first group, Koola Lobitos, in 1965, and was a key member of all his subsequent bands until Fela's death in 1997.
