July 1978: The Complete Recordings is a live album by the rock band the Grateful Dead. July 7, 1978 was the band's first appearance at Colorado's Red Rocks Amphitheatre (there were actually four dates in succession at the venue, with the band taking a seven-week break halfway in between for the recording of Shakedown Street)
Classic 70s Grateful Dead shows were rarely more triumphant or voluminous than this (numerically notable) outdoor spectacular. Red Rocks would become synonymous with U2’s pomp five years later, but in ’78 the Dead wove a very different sort of truly, deeply American magic into its dramatic setting. Across the 169-minute performance the classic, Jerry Garcia-fronted line-up, augmented with Keith and Donna Godchaux, manage to be all things to all Deadheads; shambling bar-band morphs into rollicking kick-ass country band of your dream. nd more.

Follow the Dead on a sonic journey through a superb selection of settings, an often epic adventure that finds them winning over Willie and Waylon fans in Kansas City, conjuring charisma in Omaha, and elevating the Red Rocks beyond their already spiritual planes. With five distinct performances painting the masterpiece of 1978, Betty Cantor-Jackson's always-pristine soundboard recordings, and the "hall-of-fame pedigree" of the Dead's first-ever shows at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre, this is one release that far exceeds excellence in music, sound quality, and rarity.
