Their first cycle, containing quartets 1-13, certainly counts - it was complete at the time and 13 out of 15 ain't bad. The Borodin's digital re-recordings of quartets 2, 3, 7, 8 & 12 for Virgin, however, which may or may not have been intended to be a cycle, don't qualify in my book. The Borodin was not the quartet that premiered (most of) the Shostakovich Quartets - the Beethoven, Glazunov and Taneyev Quartets did, but they were the first to finish a recording of the cycle. Except that Shostakovich himself wasn't finished and went on to compose two more quartets. This new cycle includes the Piano Quintet, the Unfinished Quartet "Allegretto 9/1" (second, after the Alexander Quartet to record this rather new find), the Two Pieces for String Quartet o. 6a, and - uniquely among cycles listed here, Music from Podrugi, o. 1a, arranged for string quartet, piano and trumpet.
Beethoven: The String Quartets. The quartets are the private voice of a man who has suffered and can rage, but who can also joke and who has both resignation and great compassion. There are more recordings of the quartets than I can count, and quite a few that are superb, starting with the Busch Quartet, and including the Vegh, the Lindsays, the second Tokyo (to hear them in person was to enter a whole new world of wonderful sound) and the Takacs. This set is wonderful, and at the price, perhaps the best introduction to the quartets that we have. Emerson gives the fireworks, but here it feels like it's the fireworks with soul. I have to say, listening side by side with the quartetto italiano box, I find them both brilliant, but these guys are more exciting without losing the profundity.
The String Quartets is a new album by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson and the Carducci Quartet featuring the classic songs of Jethro Tull, arranged and orchestrated by John O’Hara. Ian plays flute on most of the tracks and even sings a few lines here and there to provide his trademark sounds in the context of classical music traditions. Living In The Past, Aqualung, Locomotive Breath and Bungle In The Jungle are amongst the album track listing but appear, along with their fellow musical travelers, under more cryptic titles to differentiate them from the original recordings and arrangements.

The cycle from Fitzwilliam (Decca), and Borodin String Quartets (Chandos Historical) are all great, but I like the cycle with Mandelring quartet more. I would like to hear more of his quartets and further interpretations of them. What are considered his greatest quartets and some essential recordings of them? Thanks! Reply With Quote.
