John Weldon "J. Cale (December 5, 1938 – July 26, 2013) was an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Though he deliberately avoided the limelight, his influence as a musical artist has been widely acknowledged by figures such as Mark Knopfler, Neil Young and Eric Clapton, who described him as "one of the most important artists in the history of rock". He is considered to be one of the originators of the Tulsa Sound, a loose genre drawing on blues, rockabilly, country, and jazz.
JJ Cale is one of those artist I thought I knew, but after getting this album and really listening to it I realized the man had a depth of talent that i had not ever fully appreciated. He was a remarkably talented song writer and had a deft talent with the guitar. No he was not a showy virtuoso guitar talent, but rather a ultra-cool, laid back e with a sense of timing and rhythm that I wish I ha. .While I like the Clapton joint album, I enjoy this album more. Cale's sound on this seems to fit many of the songs better.

Cale has established himself as an elusive and even reluctant legend in popular music with his sporadic string of releases over the last 38 years, he's never drastically changed his approach. Cale is a workmanlike songwriter whose roots in blues, Okie folk, and roots rock music have been informing his tales of travel, nocturnal pleasure, and everyday life all the while. Even the acclaimed but spaced out Travel Log (which was Cale's equivalent to Neil Young's Trans) never managed to root his sound that far afield from its wellspring

Naturally is the debut album by J. Cale. First released in 1972, it includes his song After Midnight which was first recorded by Eric Clapton in 1970. Cale, who was languishing in obscurity at the time, had no knowledge of Clapton’s recording of After Midnight until it became a radio hit in 1970. Naturally was recorded independently, on spec, the musicians being paid demo fees. Some songs, such as Call Me the Breeze, were recorded with primitive drum.
Cale: Well, this album was made by committee. Of the 13 songs, My Gal, One Step, The Problem, These Blues, and Motormouth are with the band. I did Rio here and took the tape to Tulsa, and Jimmy Karstein played the congas. The rest are just me.
Stay Around, a posthumous album from JJ Cale, will be issued on April 26 via Because Music.
