Perico Ripiao is one of the three types of merengue played in Dominican Republic. This is considered the typical type of merengue and the oldest still played. It originated in the Santiago area in the Cibao Valley region of the country. This is the highest award an artist can receive. Tatico Henríquez (. 976),who was born in Nagua, Dominican Republic, is considered to be the godfather of modern merengue típico. The changes he made to the genre gave the merengue a new flair. He was originally a member of the group Trío Reynoso where his style of playing the accordion made him immediately loved.
Tatico Henriquez began playing accordion under the guidance of his father, Bolo Henriquez, and uncle Bilo, who were both seasoned accordionists. Bolo and Bilo Henriquez soon began bringing young Tatico to play with them at religious functions. Nagua in the 1950s nurtured a thriving merengue tipico scene. Tatico eventually formed his own band, ‘Tatico y sus Muchachos’, and was a regular fixture on the popular radio station Radio Quisqueyana, on the show Musica Tipica Dominicana hosted by DJ Rafael Cardenas. Songs like Los Picadores, La Mujer Ajena, La Mujer Es Una Flor and La Correa, helped make Tatico famous throughout the Dominican Republic, leading to many tours and recordings. Cardenas continued to work as Tatico’s impresario and touring agent.

Tatico Henríquez (July 30, 1943 – May 23, 1976), considered one of the best accordionists of merengue tipico, was born in Nagua, Dominican Republic. His career began in the 1960s and the early 1970s. He was known for his skill on the accordion and the addition of new instruments to a standard merengue tipico band. His father's name was Bolo Henriquez. He has a son named Fary Henriquez who also plays accordion. He is the father of Erwin Mendez, who resides in the Dominican Republic.
