Black Music is the first album by Chocolate Genius. It was released on V2 Records on July 14, 1998. Track 5, "My Mom", is about a return visit to his childhood home and the mother he was losing to senility ("My mom, my sweet mom/She don't remember my name. The song "Life" was used in the final episode of season 2 of Breaking Bad. Just prior to recording Black Music, Chocolate Genius had finished reading The Alexandria Quartet by Lawrence Durrell.

Released November 14, 2003. The Black Album Tracklist. Hov originally had the idea for The Black Album in 1998, and he wanted close friend DJ Premier to produce all of the tracks. It never eventuated, but he revisited the concept for his 2003 retirement album and wanted to enlist a different producer for each track. In the end Hov ended up with 10 different producers across the 14 tracks.
Chocolate Genius, Inc. is a loose collective of musicians centered around Marc Anthony Thompson, a singer-songwriter from New York City. Thompson released two albums during the 1980s under his own name, and has been compared to a wide variety of musicians, including Tom Waits, Prince, Jeff Buckley, D'Angelo, Lenny Kravitz, and Terence Trent D'Arby. He signed to V2 Records for Black Music, his 1998 debut under the name of Chocolate Genius.
