In the 1960s, he worked as a sideman with everyone from Freddie Hubbard to Sun Ra. In contrast to these groundbreaking sessions, his 1976 solo debut consisted entirely of Duke Ellington compositions. Within Spaulding's expansive saxophone style, one can hear traces of Charlie Parker's dazzling Bebop flights and Ornette Coleman's t, blues-drenched Free Jazz.
