Portishead are an English band formed in 1991 in Bristol. They are often considered one of the pioneers of trip hop music. The band are named after the nearby town of the same name, eight miles west of Bristol, along the coast. Portishead consists of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley, while sometimes citing a fourth member, Dave McDonald, an engineer on their first records. Their debut album, Dummy, was met with critical acclaim in 1994. Two other studio albums were issued: Portishead in 1997 and Third in 2008.
While Portishead inches their way toward making years of internet chatter about a possible new album a reality (they’re reportedly now in the mixing phase), the Bristol, UK trio’s last studio release has been steadily approaching its 10th birthday. Where Portishead’s debut, 1994’s Dummy, is noirish and lush, even warm, and just as content to be lavished with attention as it is to be played as gauzy background music at a dinner party, the group’s eponymous follow-up insists on being the focus of attention-like a problem child who knows its parents are expecting. Beth Gibbons still sings her future-blues like an old torchbearer in a smoky lounge, but this time she does so as if she were cast as Billie Holiday’s evil doppelganger in a David Lynch film. In a sense, a third studio album is essential to validate Portishead’s glorious Middle Child Syndrome.
Third (Portishead album). Third is the third studio album by the English band Portishead, released on 28 April 2008 by Island Records in the United Kingdom and on 29 April by Mercury Records in the United States. Portishead self-produced Third in their Bristol studios. Many of the album's songs existed for years as sketches, with the members exchanging recordings and adding ideas
Album · 1997 · 11 Songs. After scoring a freak hit with "Sour Times" from their debut album, Dummy, Portishead approached their second album without trying to deliberately repeat its success. The self-titled follow-up is similar to Dummy but there's never a feeling of contrivance or towards perceived commercial concessions. Instead, Portishead begins with the tense and entrancing "Cowboys," a repetitive menace that's highlighted by Beth Gibbons' tortured, squeaking vocals and more of the group's trademark spy film dramatics. Time ticks with metronomic precision while emergency.
