Electric Guitars were an English band formed early in 1980 by Neil Davenport (vocals, lyrics) and Richard Hall (bass, vocals) who were both studying English at Bristol University. The band soon increased to a five-man line-up, with Andy Saunders (guitar, vocals), Matt Salt (drums) and Dick Truscott (keyboards), they also later added two backing singers: Sarah and Wendy Patridge. Their first single "Health", "Continental Shelf" was released on local label Fried Egg Records in 1980.
The Beatles started out like most other rock and roll bands, employing a standard guitars/bass/drums instrumentation. As their touring days wound down, they became a full-time studio band. Their scope of experimentation grew, as did the palette of sounds. This article attempts to list the instruments used to achieve those results. Not listed are instruments played by the Beatles’ session players such as cello, violin, saxophone, trumpet, French horn or the 41-piece orchestra heard on "A Day in the Life".

The era of guitars was born for players who couldn’t get the sound they were looking for and needed more high gain. It was 35 years ago when Warner Brothers Records released Van Halen l debut album by the California rockers. The band instantly grew in popularity and sales and introduced a new sound and new style of playing. The second track on the record, an instrumental solo called Eruption had millions of kids emulating Eddie’s two-hand tapping technique in music stores, garages and bedrooms all over the world and also playing the instrument that was preferred by Ed, a Charvel.
