The 1980s saw the introduction of the cassette single (or "cassingle") alongside the 7-inch and 12-inch record formats and in 1987 major record labels developed a common format for the CD single References.

The cassingle separates the wheat from the chaff, zeroing in on the one song that truly deserves our undivided attention. And there is no awkward rewinding process, as identical programs are presented on both sides, so that the chosen song may be heard over and over again without stopping, until the very soul itself is illuminated in its glory. I am in possession of the complete Thompson Twins cassingle oeuvre. I own all four hit cassingles spawned by Huey Lewis & The News' Sports album.
The Waiting is a studio album by singer-songwriter Royal Wood, released in 2010, published by Songs of MapleMusic Publishing. A Discovery (We're Lovely). Tonight I Will Be Your Guide. All songs were written by Royal Wood. Tracks 1, 2, and 6 were produced, recorded and mixed by Pierre Marchand. Tracks 3, 4, 5, 7-11 were produced by Dean Drouillard and Royal Wood.
Intriguingly, cassettes also made the album a more significant format. As it was harder to select tracks on cassette than on record, listening to an album serially, without skipping, became ingrained in music culture. Cassettes also allowed more time for the album than vinyl. The Britpop boom provided a last hurrah for the humble cassingle, a format dying in popularity as CD sales grew. Brian Cannon of the design company Microdot made one notable cassingle curio: the cassette version of Oasis's Cigarettes and Alcohol, made up to look, and open, like a packet of 20 cigarettes. Another notable Britpop item was the cassingle version of Elastica's Waking Up, designed by Jon Anonymous: made up like a packet of cards, with a spade cut out of the front, it had a band member trading card inside. 9 The cult of the cassette returns, in fuzzy sound.
The Pantyshot cassingle was a treasured possession among MSI fans, featuring an early song that supposedly lost them a record deal due to being about lusting over a 5 year-old. Little Jimmy Urine sold kisses for a dollar to fans after shows, including to the teenagers. We pored over lyrics - that we transcribed ourselves in many cases, through multiple listens and endless debate - for those nuggets of same-sex attraction and gender ambiguity. I make a good girl but I make a terrible boy, went one song. These things in my pants that we’re all waiting for, I never really knew what that thing down there was used for, went another.
