Fear, Emptiness, Despair is everything you could want from a death/grindcore hybrid. It's uncompromising attitude in Barney's lyrics and screaming to the buzzsaw guitars and pounding drums is just oozing anger, and from the get-go with Twist The Knife (Slowly) it does not let up. The speed isn't particularly frenetic in comparison to the earlier days but it makes up for it with a characteristic weight it is difficult to hear in another band. Fear, Emptiness, Despair is amongst the finest death/grind hybrids of all time if not the best. Napalm Death is certainly one of the best metal bands of all time, and whilst almost none of their releases slack this stands above a number of them.

Most of the album is mid paced death metal with some very uninspiring grooves. A lot of the songs such as "Remain Nameless" plod along mindlessly. Memorable moments, let alone memorable songs, are few and far between. Fear, Emptiness, Despair in 1994 was noted by fans of Napalm Death as the band's full transition into their '90s sound template, a death/groove metal style which divided the fan base and gained some derision among metal heads for ND changing their sound and style. The tempo and the guitar work on Primed Time are fucking great (quite fast, with blast beats too). State Of Mind features doom/progressive opening riffs with a crescendo of intensity under the sign of groove death metal.

Fear, Emptiness, Despair (1994). Nazi Punks Fuck Off" was the fifth single by the Dead Kennedys. It was released in 1981 on Alternative Tentacles with "Moral Majority" as the B-side. The English grindcore band Napalm Death recorded a cover of "Nazi Punks Fuck Off" for their 1993 EP of the same name. American Melodic death metal band Darkest Hour recorded a cover of the song for the 2007 album Kerrang! Higher Voltage. In the opening of the In God We Trust, Inc. version of "Nazi Punks Fuck Off", Biafra mentions English producer Martin Hannett, who had worked with Joy Division and Buzzcocks, accusing him, tongue-in-cheek, of having "overproduced" the recording. Hannett, in fact, did not work with the Dead Kennedys.

He delivered great concentration when we were tracking the album, Me and Barn were left to arrange the album’s track listing, though, as Mitch kind of dissolved a little into the background, unfortunately. This record is moving more and more to where I envision Napalm going. I am not sure if Mitch is/was 100 percent on board with that. So, after losing my bottle mid-Scum album, I was asked to join Napalm Death once again. Ironically, just after Scum actually came out, I think Mick had driven bass player Jim Whiteley crazy. Also, at the time, it seemed mainly because I had Napalm Death songs ready, which I suppose is odd!
