Beethoven: Diabelli Variations. Thirty-eight years old and still fabulous, Stephen Kovacevich's 1968 recording of Beethoven's Diabelli Variations sounds as good as new in this 2006 reissue. Certainly, a large part of the reason is the quality of the sound. The Dutch Philips label was one of the great classical companies of the stereo era and its piano sound was highly regarded for its clarity, warmth, and depth. But the larger part of the reason is the quality of Kovacevich's performance
Forty years have passed since Kovacevich - in those days, Stephen Bishop - recorded Beethoven's late, and greatest, set of variations, a Philips classic that has rarely been out of the catalogue. Now, with the complete cycle of the 32 sonatas behind him (for EMI), he has moved to Paul Moseley's small, enterprising independent label, and this new Diabelli explains why he is perhaps more closely associated with this iconic, if elusive, piece than any other active pianist today.

For the next few years he continued to work on the Missa, composing piano sonatas and bagatelles to satisfy the demands of publishers and the need for income, and completing the Diabelli Variations. He was ill again for an extended time in 1821, and completed the Missa in 1823, three years after its original due date.

Very special release indeed, the return after more than 40 years to the piece that first brought him worldwide fame – Stephen Kovacevich in Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations. In the 90s Stephen recorded the complete Beethoven Sonatas for EMI for the first time, and the set is one of the standard recommendations. Yet something was missing and this recording completes the cycle, which for Kovacevich has become a true life-cycle, having given his sensational Wigmore Hall debut with this piece in 1961 and recording it in a still-classic version for Philips in 1968
