George Harrison: Living in the Material World is a 2011 documentary film directed by Martin Scorsese, based on the life of The Beatles' George Harrison. It earned six nominations at the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards, winning two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Directing for Nonfiction Programming and Outstanding Nonfiction Special.

George Harrison (1967). In May 1973 came the release of George’s second studio album of new songs, Living In The Material World. He was joined in the studio by several musician friends who had also played on All Things Must Pass and others like Jim Keltner, with whom he had worked during The Concert for Bangladesh concerts in 1971. The album and its lead single, Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth) both reached number one in America and on charts around the world

George Harrison 's follow-up to the triple-disc All Things Must Pass (which had been comprised of an immense backlog of great songs that he'd built up across the last years of his time with the Beatles ), Living in the Material World was necessarily a letdown for fans and critics, appearing as it did.

George Harrison’s eagerly anticipated fourth solo album, Living in A Material World, is both introspective and deeply spiritual in nature. George was inspired to write, ‘The Day the World Gets ‘Round’ following the Concert for Bangladesh in August 1971. Other songs take a look back at the legacy left by The Beatles, in particular, ‘Sue Me, Sue You Blues’. But the album reflects George’s desire to be seen as his own man, and not simply as the former Beatle. The Light That Has Lighted the World’, ‘Who Can See It’ and ‘Be Here Now’ all fall into this category

George Harrison first became known to the world as "The Quiet Beatle" of the Fab Four, but there was far more to his life than simply being a part of The Beatles. This film explores the life and career of this seminal musician, philanthropist, film producer and amateur race car driver who grew to make his own mark on the world. It's clear from those interviewed that Harrison wanted to experience as much as he can and there's a lot of talk about him preparing himself for death and he wanting to be prepared for when he eventually left his body.

George Harrison said about the album: Oh yeah. I’m living in it. But people interpret it to mean money, cars, that sort of thing– although those are part of the material world. The material world is like the physical world, as opposed to the spiritual. For me, living in the material world just meant being in this physical body with all the things that go along with it.
