Nandi What a year it's been for Jlin - her debut album 'Dark Energy' was released to massive critical acclaim at the start of April - which put her firmly on the map as one of 2015's most exciting producers. Her DJ debut was at New York's MoMA PS1 in August and her live debut will be at Unsound festival this October. These are followed by 'BuZilla' a tribute to and re-version of her mentor RP Boo's 'Heavy Heat', with the track chopped into even more jagged shapes than the original.
Jlin's debut album Dark Energy felt like a keyhole peek into a bedroom producer's mind. In the broad array of vocal and synth samples, off-beat time signatures that varied from song to song, and even within the song itself, the conjunction of tens of ideas competing for dominance, you could hear a singular aesthetic being forged. One can imagine Jlin (Jerrilynn Patton) spent hours crafting the music in a way that spoke to her. On her new EP, Free Fall, this same excitement is still at work, though not in a manner as excitingly weird as Dark Energy. Dark Energy was a record for the.

Black Origami is the second album by Indiana producer Jlin, first issued for streaming on May 11, 2017 and on other formats by Planet Mu on May 19, 2017. Produced in a year from 2015 to 2016, it features collaborations with William Basinski, Holly Herndon, Fawkes, and Dope Saint Jude. The title of Black Origami describes the structure of the music: the songs are complex pieces that take advantage of silence as much as sounds, similar to how an origami makes intricate art based on plain paper
Jlin told Pitchfork that, in making music, "You have to face things about yourself you don't even want to face. I have to go into a space that makes me cringe every time I go there. This cringe carries over to the listener. By this point you're gasping for one. (Planet Mu reportedly asked the album's mastering engineer to tone down its sonic aggression; it remains an eardrum-scorching listen). This is another way in which Jlin is a modernist: she's not afraid to make her art difficult. In fact, she almost treats difficulty as a virtue. In the Pitchfork interview, she hit out at ambitionless producers: "You made something 'cause it sounds good?
Jerrilynn Patton, also known as Jlin, is the most prominent female juke/footwork music producer of this current generation. Originally from Decatur, Georgia, she grew up and still resides in Gary, Indiana, 20 miles from downtown Chicago.
Jlin dropped one of the year’s best album with her debut, Dark Energy, a series of meticulously crafted and (astonishingly) sample-free tracks that dance with the macabre while retaining the locomotive power of the finest footwork cuts. She’ll cap off the year with Free Fall, an EP that shows a transition from Dark Energy, with the cartoonish hysteria of ‘Eu4ria’ and the rave-y, dancefloor-ready ‘I Am The Queen’. Elsewhere, ‘BuZilla’ reworks RP Boo’s ‘Heavy Heat’, while ‘Nandi’ is the first glimpse of her experiments with new sounds
