Filigree & Shadow is the second album released by 4AD collective This Mortal Coil, an umbrella title for a loose grouping of guest musicians and vocalists brought together by label boss Ivo Watts-Russell. The supergroup consists primarily of artists attached to the 4AD label, of which Watts-Russell was the co-founder and (at the time) the owner and director.

The sophomore album from 4AD label supergroup This Mortal Coil is a collection of shoegaze folk and dramatic dream pop that feels like a movie soundtrack. Half of the album is instrumental, allowing the producers to flex their mastery of swirly, psychedelic ambience and neo-gothic drama.

This Mortal Coil was a music collective led by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of the British record label 4AD. Although Watts-Russell and John Fryer were technically the only two official members, the band's recorded output featured a large rotating cast of supporting artists, many of whom were otherwise associated with 4AD, including members of Cocteau Twins, Pixies, and Dead Can Dance.

This double album is a huge disappointment. I read on the net that it’s a «goth classic etc». Being on 4 AD and this is a joint project, you’d exept more Cocteau twins/dead can dance collaboration here, well it’s not. It’s like a walk in the desert.

After all these years, I still can't believe how beautiful this album is.

F&S is a quintessential acquisition for anyone who is interested in the aesthetic side of 80s music.(Should the album receive a a reissue, they should make it a proper gatefold and lose the white frame from the cover, like they did on CDs)
