In conjunction with the release of Ken Burns' ten-part, 19-hour epic PBS documentary Jazz, Columbia issued 22 single-disc compilations devoted to jazz's most significant artists, as well as a five-disc historical summary. Since the individual compilations attempt to present balanced overviews of each artist's career, tracks from multiple labels have thankfully been licensed where appropriate.

But Monk's piano is so distinct that from 1947 "Night in Tunisia" rewrite to 1971 "Nice Work If You Can Get It" decon this collection moves as one thing. Like Basie, Monk is a minimalist master of silence and space. But where Basie's few notes imply the full-bodied riff he's prepared for the band, Monk writes the way he plays. The power of this song and the odd-sounding harmonies really make this a standout on the CD. The next important segment of Monk's career is the career-changing gig at New York's Five Spot Cafe in 1957, where for five months Monk's quartet featured the relatively unknown John Coltrane.
is the seventh album Thelonious Monk released for Columbia Records, featuring several original compositions as well as jazz standards. The track "Pannonica" is a tribute to the jazz patron Nica de Koenigswarter. The track "Teo" is a tribute to the albums' producer Teo Macero. The album cover is a photo of Monk taken by W. Eugene Smith in 1959. Between 1957 and 1965, Monk and other prominent New York jazz musicians rehearsed at the photographer's home, nicknamed 'The Jazz Loft'.
