Boxing Day is a secular holiday celebrated the day after Christmas Day. It originated in the United Kingdom and is celebrated in a number of countries that previously formed part of the British Empire. Boxing Day is on 26 December, although the attached bank holiday or public holiday may take place either on that day or two days later. In some European countries such as Romania, Hungary, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia, 26 December is celebrated as a Second Christmas Day.
Since then, a Boxing Day "Handicap Race" has been organised on Southend Pier every year. We could not start everyone at the same time. For a start I'm not sure the pier's boardwalk would appreciate it," Ms Cork said. For seconds, the pier is not closed to the public so the race goes ahead around other visitors. Handicaps for the participants, including those in the line-up for the 1965 race, are worked out on the basis of times for events between 800m and 10,000m.

What an interesting angling year we have had, the summers are fishing much better than they ever have but our winter stocks have once again failed to show. It has also been a good summer for the smooth-hounds from the boats, with one or two hounds touching the 20lb mark
When Boxing Day falls on a weekend, as it did in 2016, the Monday after it is declared a public holiday, too. Boxing Day is primarily a British tradition, and the UK has exported it to Australia, Canada and New Zealand (where is primarily become a day dedicated to shopping and sporting events). Why is it called Boxing Day? There are a few competing stories for the origin of the name, but none are definitive

In Britain, Boxing Day is usually celebrated on the following day after Christmas Day, which is 26 December. However, strictly speaking, Boxing Day is the first weekday after Christmas (see definition in the Oxford English Dictionary). Like Christmas Day, Boxing Day is a public holiday. This means it is typically a non working day in the whole of Britain. When Boxing Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday the following Monday is the public holiday.
