The Heart of Saturday Night is the second studio album by singer and songwriter Tom Waits, released in 1974 on Asylum Records. The title song was written as a tribute to Jack Kerouac. The album cover is based on In the Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra. It is an illustration featuring a tired Tom Waits being observed by a blonde prostitute as he exits a neon-lit cocktail lounge late at night. Cal Schenkel was the art director and the cover art was created by Lynn Lascaro.

Tom Waits is an urban romantic poet whose lyrics echo the oral Beat poetry pioneered by Kerouac, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti and Corso in the Fifties. Like the Beats, Waits has an ear for the underlying rhythms of American speech and an impressive ability to catalog and juxtapose provocative snatches of cityscape while creating a grandly sentimental vision. Waits has the special ability to redeem cliches - to make such phrases as lonesome ol’ town and ol’ bloodshot moon at once sincere and sardonic. Waits has a marvelously raspy voice, a jazz singer’s phrasing, and plays a fair piano.
In 1974, Tom Waits had it all: acclaimed "Closing Time", contract on one of the then most influent labels, Asylum, whose boss was David Geffen, The Eagles covered his song "Ol' 55", which endeared Waits to wider audience. The only problem was that Tom Waits didn't want to do country rock and he didn't want to be part of the mainstream. The Heart Of The Saturday Night" is great late night album. So, If you listen to it in car, or in day time, it loses its part of the charm. It could be tiring, boring, even disturbing. So it can be extremely enjoyable if you listen to it in the dark room or in iPod during late night time walk.
